If you haven't listened to the first podcast, I'm going to tell you it's a must listen. I know this is painful for all you rule breakers, but I don't want you out in the cold because you jumped ahead.

Foundations can either help you build a solid infrastructure or chase money. I'm not here to point fingers because everyone has a part to play in social good. The question is how will you make it happen on your end? We're both nonprofits wanting to thrive and help our communities.

As this will be another 2-part episode, this was originally inspired by a blog I wrote a couple of years ago. I couldn't keep it under 20 minutes after starting. When I started my consulting company, my goal was to be the best nonprofit and faith-based consultant in SW Washington (aka, Vancouver or Clark County). From a nonprofit standpoint, I went to the benchmark organization who rules the funding, which is the Community Foundation of Southwest Washington (aka, CFSWW).

In the last two years, I've ensured to stay out of the politicking. As a political science nerd, these last couple of years have been great water cooler content. Politics are alive, and depending on your stance it's either going well or bad. In this episode, none of that will be mentioned. Haha!

In this second edition of Push Through the Noise, distractions are one thing but fears are something else. Honestly, our fears are really the limits that keep us from reaching our own goals. However, the road to accomplishing that goal or task is much harder, lonelier and difficult than other paths so we choose something less resistant.

The Social Venture Partners in Seattle (aka, SVP) Fast Pitch was awesome. It was my first time going to this event. After a five hour drive round trip, it was definitely worth it to attend. For the last 14 years, I've wondered where all the great social good players go to meet, compete and hang out. Annnnnddd, waaa-lah. I found them!

My first introduction to the podcast world was a link from an old buddy that knew I liked to intake entrepreneurial materials. The podcasts were very well known. Matter of fact, one was the Entrepreneur on Fire, John Lee Dumas, who we had on the show not too long ago.

Almost three months out from Houston's Hurricane Harvey, we bring you a fellow social entrepreneur that has experienced the natural disaster and living through the recovery. For those readers who are reading this in real-time, our national/local news doesn't include the recovery efforts. As a social entrepreneur, I'm wanting to know what's going on.

We all listened and watched when Oprah was on everyday at 4pm. She was a household name. The saying, "Oprah said ..." was a typical reference for people's arguments. Her show was THE show to be on if you were somebody.

Let's be honest and subscribe to the notion, no one likes nor wants to lose. There hasn't been one grant I wrote and believed it wasn't going to be funded. I would need to pass the torch if that was the case right?!

When I didn't win, I was shocked. I was like, "C'mon, are you serious?" Someone messed up on the votes or something. Losing a grant is painful, but also detrimental to the organization. Let me explain.

In all the grants I've wrote throughout the years, I expected to win. Every grant took countless hours of research, design and thought. I truly poured my soul in each one, so when it got rejected my feelings were hurt. In the hindsight of glancing back to my initial grants, I don't think I would have approved my grant neither.
